Madison's been juicing!

Well, she's been making green juice for her momma and she loves it too! Everyday for breakfast, I partake in a lovely green juice made up of a base of 1 large cucumber and 4 stalks of celery. From there, I add anything from sunflower sprouts, brocolli stems, beet greens, romaine, spinach, kale or whatever else I have on hand! My personal favorite is the base plus beet greens (SO yummy and makes the juice a gorgeous red color!), and sunflower sprouts. It usually yields 16-18 ounces of goodness but today we got 20 ounces of love! It is a wonderful, healing start to my day and I have the amazing Kris Carr to thank for it. Today marks the end of the 21 day cleanse I did from her book Crazy Sexy Diet. I am down about 9 pounds and feeling fantastic. I love her plan, her book, her movie and feel over all so much healthier than I did 3 weeks ago. I have a feeling 2012 is going to be a great year! Especially with such a great "juicer" in the house. :)

I should mention, I do not have a fancy juicer just yet. Steve had an old Krups model collecting dust that I have been using for the last 3 weeks. I have grown to love the taste of the juice and all the amazing nutrients it is providing me but I do plan on upgrading our juicer soon!

Sweet, loving, smart and fun. Those are just a few words to describe the incredible siblings from this session. I have known this family for about 13 years and let me tell you, these kids just get more beautiful every year! This year, I challenged them with some model type poses, and to say they were up for it, is an understatement! Thank you guys, for being so fabulously you!!

Mini Session FAQs

What is a mini session?

The holiday mini sessions are just a shorter version of our regular sessions, and focuses specifically on the family shot. We have a full session upgrade available with this special deal, to include more time for other groupings such as individual portraits of kids, portraits of Mom and Dad, etc... Please inquire for details.

What is this session for?

These sessions are perfect for your holiday cards, holiday gifts for special family and friends, as well as updated family photos for your home. Mini sessions are meant specifically for immediate family. For larger sessions, please contact us for rates and upgrades.

When will these sessions take place?

Our holiday mini sessions will be held on Saturday, October 29th and Saturday, November 19th. Please email us for time and location information. Sessions are booked every 45 minutes, so please plan to arrive at least 5 minutes early to your session, to ensure you get the full allotted session time.

How do I book my session?

Please email us at: info@thisislifephotography.com to secure a date and time for your mini session. We have limited sessions available and will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. The $175 mini session fee is due upon booking. This session fee is non refundable.

Will we be able to order prints and products, such as canvases and albums?

Of course! Special package pricing will be available to the mini session clients and will includes items such as gift prints, canvases, albums and the session disk. We believe that professional portraits make the best, most personal holiday gift! :)

I love all of the wonderful families that I photograph. My job is to watch for those sweet moments in between loved ones and make sure they remember them forever. I am so blessed! There are certain families that truly stick out. The family dynamic is so strong, you leave their presence happier. This is one of those families. A family of three beautiful young ladies, two incredibly adorable boys and the best parents the five of them could ask for. Sadly, they are moving to California so this just may be the last session I have the pleasure of doing with them! As a wedding photographer, I feel lucky to be a part of a couple's very special day. All of the excitement and emotion are contagious and it helps me to stay inspired to capture the day for each amazing couple. I include engagement sessions in all of my packages so that my couples get a chance to practice in front of the camera before the big day. These sessions are truly my favorite. There is something so compelling about a couple that is gearing up to spend the rest of their lives together.

Madison and Adam are young and fun and silly. My kind of couple! I knew I'd love them the minute they mentioned the Phoenix Art Museum as their wedding venue. It also helps that she shares the same name as my daughter. Madisons are the best. :)

One year of Madison Grace

Dear Madison,

As usual, Mommy and Daddy are up late, working on projects and to do lists and anything else that may get in the way of quality time with you during the day. We aren't the best writers or bloggers for that matter, but we wanted to try to forget about that as we wrote this letter to you. On this day, one year ago, you made Mommy the happiest Mommy around. You taught me that I could do things I never imagined I was capable of doing. Your birth was the most profound, most difficult and most wonderful experience of my life. You were born surrounded with love in our very own home. Each day since you were born has been full of joy, wonder, laughter and love. Daddy and I couldn't have imagined the happiness and fulfillment you would bring to our lives. You make up the best parts of both of us and we are such better people because of you. My mom, your grandmother, would have been just as overjoyed with all that you are as we are. I miss her everyday and only hope I can give you all that you need and want from me as your mom. I hope that Daddy and I teach you to be kind and giving, loving and forgiving and to always enjoy each day of your life. I will surely make mistakes along the way. I hope that you will forgive me for those mistakes and learn from them and become better because of them. I love you more than any letter I write could ever convey. We wanted to share some fun things we remember about your first year of life and a photo from each month since you've been born. Happy birthday my angel.

Mommy and Daddy made a list of the cute things you would do as you grew. We didn't want to ever forget one second we spent with you. Here are a few of the fun memories you gave us:

You have been talking and smiling since day one

Mommy would always tell Daddy "she makes this face" but by the time he'd look, you'd change it and I couldn't explain it in words

You would tuck your thumbs in

You have been singing since you were only a few weeks old and you love music.

You wake up smiling and mommy and daddy would wake up just to see this

Mommy would say "did you see that? I think she just grew."

We would say that you were "making out with Fred," your monkey when you'd try to kiss him, most likely looking to nurse.

When you are hungry you would attack us like a shark - thrashing your head from side to side

The first 4 or 5 weeks or so we LIVED on the couch with you. Daddy would make Mommy food and even feed her sometimes. Daddy would sleep downstairs with you and Mommy would make sure you and Daddy were covered up and Daddy had the remote, etc...because we wouldn't budge for hours on end with you in our arms. You became a tummy sleeper because of it! Daddy would sleep downstairs with you from about 11ish to 2 or 3 ish when you were ready to eat. Then you guys would come upstairs, Mommy would feed you and hold you for 3 or 4 hours and Daddy would take you back again so Mommy could get about an hour of sleep (sometimes!!)

Mommy didn't ride in the front seat of the van ever! She always sat in the back to watch you, make sure you were ok and your head wouldn't fall forward and to just play with and admire you. Sometime Daddy would want in on the fun. When you got older,he would sit in the back with you and Mommy would drive. People probably thought we were so silly with no one in the front seat! Sometimes Daddy would have to sit in the back with you as well so you could suck on his finger because you always preferred Daddy's fingers for some reason.

You went from talking sweet little "goos" to screaming very quickly! You would get mad in your chair and yell at us so loud, we couldn't hear eachother talk, around 3 months old.

Your ears go up when you smile

You rolled over for the first time on January 10th 2009

You would wake up out of a deep sleep, look over at us, give us a HUGE smile and then go back to sleep

You like it when Daddy is being silly. We say you get "trouble eyeballs" to be a jokester with Daddy

You do funny things with your tongue (curls it up on her top lip)

Your got your little teeffies on Feb 6th or 7th 2009. Bottom two.

It was harder than you could ever imagine to pick just one photo from each month since you were born. Here are some of our favorites:

Here you are on our bed, right after birth! You were born there and you sleep there every night. What a special part of our story that is. You didn't cry long. You were such a happy baby. :) Mommy was surprised you didn't have red hair!

We could watch you sleep forever and we often did. Mommy and Daddy would admire you and talk about all of the amazing things you were up to. You looked so peaceful and sweet.

You love baths! We love bath time too, especially putting you in these cute little towels that show just your sweet face.

Your first Christmas was the happiest Christmas Mommy ever had. All of our energy and attention was on you and it made it more special than I've ever known Christmas to be.

We sure did go a lot of places your first year and you loved it! You made all of Mommy's clients smile when you came to the photo shoots and you loved being outdoors.

By four months old you were already standing up while holding onto things. We were shocked! You were always so eager to learn and do new things. From this point on, you never sat still.

You love your books. We couldn't wait to read to you. It is important to Mommy and Daddy that you learn to love reading at a young age. Seems it won't be a battle at all.

Madison surely just writing a blog for us or updating Facebook. :) As much as we are on the computers in this house, it's no surprise she is fascinated with them.

Look at those teeth! You were an early bloomer with most developmental milestones. We joked that we could have probably found a photo of you in the car like this from each month of your life thus far, as much as we travel!

We make homemade baby food for you from fresh organic produce. You love it! You won't even touch the jarred stuff which is fine by us. We also waited to give you solids until we felt the time was right. You learned so fast how to eat all the delicious food and we discovered that cauliflower is your favorite!

You will continue to melt our hearts with that smile. You are so sweet and so curious.

Our first dine-in experience! The Chicago Diner had plenty of colors and people and things to look at. You were such an angel and we had the best time eating together as a family. They made steamed veggies for you and you loved eating them at the table with us.

There's that sassy girl I know today! At your second home, LUX, on Eric's bike! You were so excited when we put you on that.

Here you are today, on your first birthday. We have fallen in love with you more and more everyday. We will continue to learn from you and be better from you. I hope you will feel the same sweet girl.

I really love being a photographer. I love meeting new people. I love witnessing real love and documenting it. There is a certain magic about it that makes me question; is this even work? I am having too much fun!
Eric and Breanne were proof for me that I have the best job in the world. They were lighthearted and sweet and so much fun to be around. Steve and I met this fabulous couple at LUX coffeebar, which we are now officially obsessed with. We actually contemplated moving to downtown Phoenix just to be closer. Yes people, it is that good. If you haven't been, go! Right now! It is the freshest, most delicious coffee. Really, everything they serve is fresh and delicious. Not to mention that all of the employees are awesome and friendly and make you feel at home. But I digress, back to the photos.

This has to be one of the most difficult sessions I've had to edit in quite some time, simply because I loved it so much! "L" was such a character and Mom was just beautiful. This is as hard as I thought it would be! Picking only two images is torture for me. I've known little "L" since he was about a year old. He gets more and more adorable the older he gets. I actually used his photo on my first business cards. Just look at those eyes! I couldn't bring myself to create many black and whites because of those amazing blue eyes. He kept me on my toes the whole shoot as he doesn't give away smiles easily. He also is quite the photographer and we traded smiles for a turn behind the camera. Hey guys. We've given a little more thought to our blog teasers. As many of you know, in the past, we've posted 5-7 images on average for our blog teasers. But we got to thinking and 5-7 images is really a lot more than just a teaser. So from now on when we say teaser, we mean T E A S E R! and we will be posting one or two images from your session. It's going to be hard for me to pick and put up on the blog only one or two images and I'm sure this will be torture for my couples and families.

I picked Kelli & Cody as my first couple for my blog teaser because they were so much fun. Their wedding is this Fall and they're planning some really cool and unique, not "trendy" things for their wedding. I'm so excited and can't wait to see what they have in store.

Brides Give Back-Success!

The Brides Give Back charity event was a huge success. As most of you already know, we donated one of our wedding collections, which includes full wedding day coverage, engagement session, assistant photographer, all images on high resolution DVD and one of our new products, an eco-friendly wedding album. It was such a joy to watch couples bid on our donated collection! The winning bidders of our collection helped raise $1000 for The Faith House which is a domestic violence shelter helping women and their families get back on their feet after suffering from abuse. We are beyond thrilled to have been a part of this amazing event. Big thanks to the most fabulous Sarah Hubbell of The Wedding Hub for working tirelessly to make this unique night happen. I am anticipating an even bigger event next year!

Way Cool Hair!!!

We have been wanting haircuts for a couple of weeks now. We asked around for referrals to hair stylists since we never cut our hair and don't know anyone that we love. We eventually asked one of our favorite baristas at LUX coffeebar and he recommended "Way Cool" Hair Pollution on 15th Street and McDowell. We checked out their website and we knew that was where we would be taking the plunge! We had our new do's done by Sam and immediately became loyal clients. Her calm demeanor made us feel comfortable as if we've been longtime friends. The atmosphere was bright and eccentric and the talented stylists were surely creating Way Cool hairdo's! Madison was mesmerized by all of the colors, textures and artwork. Not only do they offer sweet hair styles, they have an art studio next door, they serve as an art gallery and show new artists every month and they even have a vintage clothing boutique in the back of the shop.

I've never had hair this short and Steve has been sporting the long hair for a few years now, so we feel like different people! Now if we can only update our wardrobe...

Katie & Pat Day After Session

We just photographed a fun "day after" session with Katie & Pat on Sunday. Well, it wasn't literally the day after their wedding, more like 3 months after! We found some fun spots in downtown Phoenix as well as our favorite hang out, LUX coffeebar, where we got our fair share of funny looks! These sessions are a fun excuse to get dressed back up and take some photos that you may not have had time to get the day of your wedding. Without the ongoing thoughts of the timeline of the wedding, the couple can relax, have fun and be true models for the day! More to come of this fun session, so check back soon!

Madison is 3 months old!

Everyone told me that the first year just flies by with a new baby and that couldn't be more true for us. I feel like the past 3 months have gone by faster than any part of my life so far. It has been the most rewarding, most significant time I've had and I am so thankful for such a healthy and beautiful daughter. We took this photo on January 5th, when Madison was officially 3 months old. Daddy is hiding behind the chair holding her up while Mommy bounced around trying to get her to look at the camera! She is such a curious baby, it's hard to get her to look at Mommy when there are so many other interesting things around her! Thank you all for sharing this special journey with us. Madison's birth announcement

Madison's birth announcement is finally done. We thought about just skipping it because we waited too long, but I realized it didn't matter when we did it, as long as we did it and used a really early photo. I know she will love to have this when she is older. She was 4 days old in this photo and it really feels like yesterday. We are cherishing every moment with her as time is just flying by and she is growing right in front of our eyes.

Their daughter is so adorable and so talkative. She was completely fascinated with the water fountains throughout the Scottsdale Civic Center. She kept saying "wa-wa" in her cute little voice. She also kept saying "okay, okay, okay" in that same cute voice. She had us cracking up.

We got to the Scottsdale Civic Center a little early, and we didn't know this before that day, but they have a farmers market; Scottsdale Downtown's Old Town Farmers' Market held on Saturday's through May. We were so excited to find this hidden gem and can't wait to make up an excuse to go again.

Happy Thanksgiving from Madison and This Is Life Photography.

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for all that we have. So this thanksgiving we'd like to list what we're thankful for.

First and foremost we are thankful for our little Madison. She is such a precious baby. Is there's nothing wrong with being slightly bias?

We're thankful for all her smiles. Especially the ones she gives us in the morning when she wakes up. What a wonderful site to wake up to!

We are thankful that Madison and her two older sisters, Dominique and Alexxis are all in good health. We're not sure if you can ask for anything more as parents.

I [Steve] am so very thankful that Madison has such a wonderful mother. Madison says her mommy is the best mommy ever and she is so thankful for all her hugs, kisses and all her love.

I [Steve] am also thankful to have Marisa in my life. I can't think of a better partner to share my life with and certainly couldn't think of a better mother for our baby Madison.

I [Steve] am thankful that Madison has two wonderful older sisters that love her very much. They are so sweet with her and Madison loves them. We are all thankful for the time we get to share together.

We are thankful to all our family and friends who've shared their love with us over this past year. Having a child really puts the importance of love into perspective.

And lastly, we are thankful for all of our wonderful clients. We are thankful that you have allowed us into your lives to capture your special moments.

I know I say this a lot but it's true; I have the best clients ever! The Matos family was no exception. They were a lot of fun and they're such a beautiful family. We photographed their session at the Kierland shopping center. It gave the photos an urban feel that is relaxed and fun, which I love!

I love what I do and I love the response I get once my families see their photographs for the first time.

I thought I would have posted something by now about the arrival of our beautiful daughter Madison Grace, but we have been so busy adjusting to our new life with her that getting anything done on the computer is considered a luxury! We are loving every minute with her, every cute expression and every day that she grows and changes. I just can't take enough photos of her! Babies babies everywhere! It seems I know quite a few people who are due to have their babies at around the same time I am due to have Madison. Kendra is one of them! She is due 3 weeks after me and is having a boy! We took some photos of her and her husband Chris at their home and at a park nearby. Isn't she the cutest!?

Happy 54th Birthday Mom

It's the 3rd birthday we've spent without her. Sometimes I just can't believe she is gone. I know she's watching over us and is so happy for all of her granddaughters. We see her spirit in Lily and Laila and surely we'll see it in Madison as well. Mom taught us to be proud of our age and not to feel old. She would be 54 years young today. Happy birthday, Mom. All of us girls will be getting together today to celebrate all that you were and are to us. We love you so much. It's your day.

Well, as some of you already know we are pregnant at This Is Life Photography. We've got six weeks to go until our little bundle of cuteness arrives. Six short weeks and we've not done much to prepare.

Oh, "we" equals Marisa & Steve. Steve's taken over the blog for today and has decided to write this.

We had our eco-friendly co-ed baby shower last Sunday, August 10th, 2008. It was a good time and we received lots of cool things. We'll post more on that stuff soon, and who knows, maybe we'll throw up some pictures from the shower.

One of the gifts we received was the crib you see here. It was gifted to us by my mom and grandma. It's a beautiful crib and it'll keep our little Madison safe for years to come. Besides how nice this crib looks, it only took about 15 minutes to assemble (once it was unpacked from the box). There's a detail shot of the assembly screws. Take special note on the number of screws, only 12! Now I've put together a couple cribs in my day, but this, by far, was the easiest to assemble.

All we have to do now is get the mattress and put some organic sheets on this baby and she'll be ready for Madison. We're still doing our research on crib mattresses. There's been studies to suggest that traditional crib mattresses are a danger to your child's health, so there's no way we are going to let our little baby sleep on something that is potentially dangerous to her health. Do you see the furry thing under the crib? That's our little cat Seattle. She was in there, supervising the whole time, making sure I didn't mess anything up. And by the looks of things, I think she approves of the new crib because it didn't take her long to get comfortable underneath it.

Did you happen to catch a glimpse of the can on the floor? That was my dual purpose incense holder. I had to light that to help clear the air in Madison's room and help channel my inner hippy. I really think it worked.

To wrap this one up, we have to give a big THANK YOU to my mom and grandma for buying Madison her beautiful crib. She's going to love it!

We're trying something a little different with Eva. We've decided to do a "five things about" list - in which we recall what we learned about the people we photograph. Photographs take us back to a specific point in time, but can we, or do we remember everything about that place in time? With the "five things about" list, we can have some of those "ah, that's right, I remember now" type of moments.

So, here's Eva's list.

Five things about Eva:

1. Mommy says baby Eva is "SPICY," referring to her little personality. Too cute!
2. Monkey noises make her laugh (note: Steve needs to practice monkey sounds).
3. She may have learned that boganvia flowers are not as delicious as they are pretty.
4. Baby Reggae makes her dance (but if you dance, she'll stop and take notes).
5. She's a book worm at 13 months. Future Pulitzer Prize winner?

Trash the Dress!
